EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: clear, colorless liquid.
Warning! Causes digestive and respiratory tract
irritation with possible burns. Causes eye and skin irritation and
possible burns.
Target Organs: Eyes, skin, mucous membranes.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Causes eye irritation and possible burns.
Skin:
May cause skin sensitization, an allergic reaction, which becomes
evident upon re-exposure to this material. May cause severe
irritation and possible burns.
Ingestion:
May cause severe gastrointestinal tract irritation with nausea,
vomiting and possible burns. May cause gastric disturbances and
electrolytic imbalance.
Inhalation:

of the respiratory tract with sore throat, coughing, shortness of
breath and delayed lung edema.
Chronic:
Not available.
Section 4 - First Aid Measures
|
Eyes:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes,
occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid imme
diately.
Skin:
Get medical aid immediately. Immediately flush skin with plenty of
water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing
and shoes. Destroy contaminated shoes.
Ingestion:
Do not induce vomiting. If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4
cupfuls of milk or water. Get medical aid immediately.
Inhalation:
Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh
air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If
breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.
Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
|
General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in
pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full
protective gear. Substance is nonflammable. Use water with caution
and in flooding amounts. May react exothermically with water, causing
liberation of heat and possible spattering of material.
Extinguishing Media:
Use water fog, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or regular foam.
Flash Point: Not applicable.
Autoignition Temperature: Not applicable.

(estimated) Health: 2; Flammability: 0; Instability: 0
Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
|
General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated
in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Absorb spill with inert material (e.g. vermiculite, sand or earth),
then place in suitable container. Absorb the liquid and scrub the
area with detergent and water. Clean up spills immediately,
observing precautions in the Protective Equipment section.
Section 7 - Handling and Storage
|
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and
wash before reuse. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid contact with
eyes, skin, and clothing. Keep container tightly closed. Avoid
ingestion and inhalation.
Storage:
Store in a cool, dry place. Keep container closed when not in use.
Do not store in metal containers.

Epidemiology:
~~Methanol has been shown to prooduce fetoxicity in the
embryo or fetus in laboratory animals. Specific
developmental abnormalities include:musculoskeletal,
urogenital and cardiovascular systems,
Teratogenicity:
Effects on the newborn by exposure to formaldehyde have
been reported in rats by inhalation, such as behavioral
effects, biochemical and metabolic effects and reduced
weight gain. Cytological changes were also noted. Specific
developmental abnormalities were reported by the
intraperitoneal route of exposure in mice.
Reproductive Effects:
Paternal effects were reported in male rats by inhalation,
oral ingestion and intraperitoneal injection of
formaldehyde. Organs affected included the prostate,
seminal vesicle, Cowpers gland, urethra, testes, sperm duct
and epididymis. Spermatogenesis was also affected.
